The Why

The events of the summer of 2020, from the murders of Breonna Taylor, Jacob Blake, Ahmaud Arbery, and George Floyd to the violent police response in cities large and small, have ignited a national conversation about the ways our society views harm, violence and safety. We want to acknowledge that the fight for collective liberation has been going on for so long and we know that it’s time Alameda joins. A fight for change should be happening in every community in America if we truly believe “Black Lives Matter” and “Enough is Enough.”

Transform Alameda wants to explore what it looks like when “We Keep Us Safe,” and the ways in which we can build a community that protects all of its residents. In order to see a racially just Alameda, we have to address the harm done to Black and Indigenous Alamedans and Alamedans of color who have been disproportionately impacted by police violence. The time for change has long come and gone - as a community we need to treat this as the emergency that it is.

Our Values

Transform Alameda practices unity, empathy, and respect while we fight for abolition instead of reform.

We envision an Alameda that divests from policing in order to invest in our community, addressing harm at its roots.

We imagine a future Alameda that values community-based public safety.

We aim to continuously center those most harmed by systemically racist systems, our Black and Indigenous members and neighbors.

We will meet people where they are while we acknowledge the need for continual growth.

Who We Are

We are your neighbors, we are all a part of this island community. We are parents, lawyers, artists, activists, professionals, teachers and students. We came together through city council meetings and social media messages. We shared common ideals and created this community organization to find other people who may be interested in joining this movement. If that might be you please keep an eye out for upcoming events so you can meet us virtually.
